CERTIFICATES

On request, procedures can be completed at the relevant offices for the issue of the following certificates.

Free circulation certificate
This document is needed for the export or definitive shipping of objects and artworks more than 50 years old and belonging to private individuals, which are not listed as particularly important or interesting by the Italian Ministry of Cultural Heritage and Activities. It is valid for three years from the date of issue, and is non-renewable. This permit may be refused by the Exports Office if the work is deemed to have particular cultural value.
EU licence for definitive export
This licence is needed for the definitive export from the European Union of all objects and works covered by Regulation (EC) no. 3911/92, stipulated in Appendix A of Legislative Decree no. 42 of 22/01/2004. 42.
Temporary circulation certificate
This allows artworks to leave the country for exhibitions and cultural events for a period not exceeding 18 months, and covers objects and works in circulation within the European Union or those which are travelling to third countries but do not fall under Regulation (EC) no. 3911/92, as stipulated in Appendix A of Legislative Decree no. 42 of 22/01/2004. 42.
Temporary export licence
This allows artworks to leave the country for exhibitions and cultural events for a period not exceeding 18 months, and covers objects and works going to third countries and covered by Regulation (EC) no. 3911/92, as stipulated in Appendix A of Legislative Decree no. 42 of 22/01/2004. 42.
Temporary import or shipping certificate
This certifies the import (from a third country) or the shipping (from an EU member state) of a cultural object or artwork to Italy. It is valid for five years and is renewable on request, where re-export of the object in question is permitted, subject to verification by the Export Office and presentation of the original export certificate.
Self-certification for contemporary art
For the export or shipping of artworks less than 50 years old or by a living artist, self-certification is sufficient; this must be presented at the Export Office accompanied by a valid identity document and a photograph of the item. Once the self-certification has been processed, the office may evaluate a sample of the items.
